One day you finally knew
\n<\/span>what you had to do, and began,
\n<\/span>though the voices around you
\nkept shouting
\n<\/span>their bad advice–
\n<\/span>though the whole house
\n<\/span>began to tremble
\n<\/span>and you felt the old tug
\n<\/span>at your ankles.
\n<\/span>“Mend my life!”
\n<\/span>each voice cried.
\n<\/span>But you didn’t stop.
\n<\/span>You knew what you had to do,
\n<\/span>though the wind pried
\n<\/span>with its stiff fingers
\n<\/span>at the very foundations,
\n<\/span>though their melancholy
\n<\/span>was terrible.
\n<\/span>It was already late
\n<\/span>enough, and a wild night,
\n<\/span>and the road full of fallen
\n<\/span>branches and stones.
\n<\/span>But little by little,
\n<\/span>as you left their voices behind,
\n<\/span>the stars began to burn
\n<\/span>through the sheets of clouds,
\n<\/span>and there was a new voice
\n<\/span>which you slowly
\n<\/span>recognized as your own,
\n<\/span>that kept you company
\n<\/span>as you strode deeper and deeper
\n<\/span>into the world,
\n<\/span>determined to do
\n<\/span>the only thing you could do–
\n<\/span>determined to save
\n<\/span>the only life you could save.<\/p>\n
